在描述人的身高时涉及的尺寸的单复数形式，有时可能会出现发音错误的现象

  　当询问别人的身高时，我们常用“how tall are you?”，那么对应的回答常常有几种方式，有些国家的人使用英制的(imperial)，特别是美国，如“I'm six feet tall.”，有些国家的人使用公制的(metric)，如 “I'm 183 cm.” 或 “I'm 1.83 m.”，这样的书写都没有什么问题，但是当我们用英文展开书写时，可能就会读错。

　　英制与公制的换算关系是：1 英尺 = 30.48 厘米，1 英寸 = 2.54 厘米;当使用英制描述身高时，主要以两种形式存在，一是“数字 + ft”，如 6 ft，其中 ft 是 feet 的常见缩写形式，二是全英文的，如 six feet，这两者的发音都是 [sɪks fiːt]，而且一般来说，第 一种描述方式中的数字与缩写形式 ft 中间有空格，也就是“6 ft”，例如：

　　我有六英尺高。I'm six feet tall.I'm 6 ft tall.

　　他把球扔到大约100英尺的地方。He threw the ball at approximately 100 ft.He threw the ball at approximately 100 feet.

　　但是很多的写作向导建议使用整个单词 feet，而不是缩写 ft。然而，如果一个人正在写科学文档或技术文章，缩写是可以接受的。当身高不是刚好的几英尺时，此时就要使用 inch，常见的缩写形式有 ”in“，“in.” ，““”，例如：

　　这位篮球运动员身高七英尺两英寸。常用：The basketball player is seven feet two inches tall.常用：The basketball player's height is seven feet two inches.少用：The basketball player's height is 7 ft 2 in.少用：The basketball player's height is 7 ft 2“.

　　注意：in 是 inches 的缩写，但是缩写的 in 没有复数形式，也就是没有 ins 的写法。

　　当使用公制描述身高，如写成183cm(centimeter)或1.83m(meter)时，没有任何书写上的错误，然而在写作中，无论是 centimeter 还是 meter，它们都要用复数形式 centimeters 或 meters，而且发音上得发 centimeters 和 meters 的音，毕竟在发音上 centimeters 和 centimeter，或者 meters 和 meter 是不一样的，例如：

　　我身高一百八十三厘米。正确：I’m one hundred and eighty-three centimeters [ˈsɛntɪˌmiːtəz] tall.

　　错误：I’m one hundred and eighty-three centimeter [ˈsɛntɪˌmiːtə] tall.

　　我的身高是1.83米。正确发音：My height is one point eight three meters [ˈmiːtəz].

　　错误发音：My height is one point eight three meter [ˈmiːtə(r)].

　　由此可见，在实际口语中，无论是 centimeter 还是 meter，都得发对应复数的音，在写作中，当要写成全英文时，要用 centimeters 和 meters，除非一个人只有一米高，也就是 one meter tall;在实际写作中，可以它们缩写为 cm(如183cm)或 m(1.83m)。

　　询问别人高度我们还可以用“What's your height?”，此时涉及到 centimeter 或 meter 的发音时，也同样发它们复数形式的音，只不过后面不用 tall，例如：

　　我的身高是一百八十三厘米。正确发音：My height is one hundred and eighty-three centimeters [ˈsɛntɪˌmiːtəz].错误发音：My height is one hundred and eighty-three centimeter [ˈsɛntɪˌmiːtə].

　　我的身高是1.83米。正确发音：My height is one point eighty-three meters [ˈmiːtəz].错误发音：My height is one point eighty-three meter [ˈmiːtə(r)].

　　不同的国家会偏向使用不同的度量制，目前有三个国家仍在正式使用英制，它们是美国、缅甸和利比里亚，不过后两个国家已经在转向使用公制了，也就是说，在实际使用中，我们更多的使用公制，也就是 centimeter 和 meter 来描述人的身高了。
