My neighbour's business wasunusually successful, and for years l couldn't understand why. Then l realised havingabike meant hs could gct where he wanted 10 g0 without much trouble. Other local

　　carpenters could only accept jobs in a three-kilometre radius, so no matter how skilledthey were. they could never do as many jobs is my neighbour.

　　At Pedal Power. we colleel second-hand bikes in the LK and send them 1o some of thepoorest regions in the worid. When we distribute bikes overseas we don't give them awayfor free. We'd like 10. but long term that doesn't really help the local economy. The demandfor bikes is enormous. which makes them very expensive locuily. So we sell them for 5% ofthe normal price. But in order 10 continuc opcrating we need 10 havc 1 constant supplyol bikes which we sendl ou cvery six menths.

　　One exampie of a town that' s reccived bicycles from Pedal Power is Rivas, It was the lirstplace I sen a full container of bieycles to. Most peopie there now own a bicycle The localsconomy has sdeveleped s0 much. youl woulda't recoynise. it _the sume place. In fact,

　　there are more bikes than on the streets of Amsterdam. if you've ever been there.

　　But Pedal Power still needs your help, You may have read about some of our recentproblems in the British media. In August 200. we simply ran out of money. We had

　　containers of bikes ready lo send. but no money .Io pay the bills. It was al terribie situation.We managed to ensure the bikes went out on time. but the other problems carried on

　　for several months.

　　Fortunately in October 2001 we won an Enterprise Award which helped us enormously.We invested fifteen of the seventy-five-thousand-pound prize money to help secure ourfuture. Winning the award helped raise our proftile. and the money enabled us to pay allour shipping costs, which represent our greatest expense. Pedal Power changes lives whensomeone gels a bicycle from us. they see a 14'/, increase in their income. We 're currentlylooking to invest in computers so that our office stafl can do an even better job. Becauseof' our work. pcople in a number of countrics now have a better standard of living so far

　　we ve provided 46,000 people with bikes But we'd like to send more, al icast 50,000 bythe end of the year.
