雅思词汇：ring a bell，不仅只有“按铃”的意思，它还有其他寓意

       在英语中ring 常意“戒指”的意思出现我们日常生活中，如 a gold ring，意为“金戒指”;它还经常用作动词，如给某人打电话可以用 ring sb (up)，发出铃声也可以用 ring，如 the telephone rings，意为“电话响了”。

　　当 ring 意为“给…电话时”，相当于 telephone 或 phone，常用于搭配 ring sth/sb (up) 中，其中的 up 常常可以省略，特别是在口语中;在英式英语中，phone，ring 和 call 为表示打电话的惯常用语。在美式英语中，call 最常用，但也用 phone。说美式英语的人不用 ring。telephone 非常正式，主要用于英式英语。例如：

　　A few months ago I rang up about some housing problems.几个月前，我打电话问过一些住房的问题。

　　When is the best time to ring New York?什么时间给纽约打电话最好?

　　I was about to telephone the police.我正要给警察打电话。

　　当然 phone 和 call 还可以作名词，意为“打电话，通话”等，适应于美式和英式英语，其中 phone call 比 call 正式，例如：

　　Were there any phone calls for me?有我的电话吗?

　　How do I make a local call?本地电话怎么打?

　　此时我们还可以用一个与 bell 有关的习语 give sb a bell 来表示给某人打电话，用于非正式的场合，这很大程度上是因为 bell 有“电铃(声)”的意思，例如：

　　I was going to give you a bell tomorrow. 我明天给你打电话。

　　然而 ring a bell 不是”打电话给一个铃“的意思，ring 有其他一个意思“发出铃声，响起铃声“等，可以是某物自发地响起，常见的如电话等，也可以是人为让铃响起来，常见的如按门铃等，因此作此意时，ring 可以是及物动词，也可以是不及物动词，例如：

　　Will you answer the telephone if it rings?电话铃响时你接一下好吗?

　　Someone was ringing the doorbell.有人在按门铃。

　　那么顾名思义，ring a bell 的字面意思是“让一个铃响起来”，它用来比喻某事听起来很熟悉，好像以前听过一样，有一种醍醐灌顶的感觉，例如：

　　His name rings a bell but I can't think where we met.他的名字听着很熟，但我想不起我们在哪里见过。

　　Your description rings a bell, but I don't think I've ever been there myself.你的描述听起来耳熟，但我想我自己从未去过那里。

　　需要注意的是，ring a bell 和 ring the bell 是完全不一样的两个短语，前者的主语通常是物，而后者的 ring the bell 的主要是人，也就是有人使铃声响起，这里用 the bell，表明是使具体的某个铃响起来，例如：

　　Ring the bell to see if they're in.按按门铃，看他们在不在家。

　　The door was opened before she could ring the bell. 她还没来得及按门铃，门就开了。
